The collection contains Spoffords's correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, clippings, photographs, several audiocassettes, and personal belongings primarily related to her time in China. It includes a manuscript written by her friend, Betty Lamb, who interviewed her and wrote about her experiences in China in: Tiger bone wine, Leo Spofford's letters from China, which was completed in 1985.

Leo Griffin Spofford worked for various government agencies from 1932-1947 including the WPA, the War Public Services Division of the Federal Works Agency, and the New Orleans Dept. of War Emergency Children's Service. She became regional director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association in 1946 and was sent to the Hunan Province of China, where she spent 8 months establishing refugee camps and orphanages.
